The temperature just ticked a few degrees above freezing and the rain is hammering the roof.
Angel Cordero leaned on the wooden wall, watching but not watching the final two horses walk around the back ring at Keeneland Monday. A colt by Offlee Wild and a colt by Bernardini. Cordero looked at the one of them, “nice horse,” but he was miles, ages away from that horse, that moment.
The move is complete. A shade under 800 miles last week from Lexington to Saratoga Springs. Recovered from that, mostly.
Ventured home to Pennsylvania for Easter, the first time I’ve been home since I squeezed in a two-day visit before Christmas. Miles, hardly knowing his cousins, his grandparents these days. Life seems to have gotten too fast, too harried for trips home.
Nearly 15 years is a long time.
Sometimes it feels like just yesterday that a job took me from my hometown to Lexington. Other times, usually when they involve trying to run a road race against some young-legged 20-somethings or staring the mirror at the gray hairs, it feels like an eternity.
The running joke around the house here in Lexington goes something like this: “We need to move to upstate New York just to get warm.”

Leaving already? It seems I just got home. Four days to get over jet lag, wash clothes, eat a couple of home-cooked meals, reintroduce myself to my wife and son, catch a cold (let the cold catch me) and then gone again. Cheltenham last week, Florida this week. Trading tweed suits for track suits, 12-year-old geldings for 2-year-old colts.
The 2013 Hall of Fame ballot showed up in the mailbox today and got me thinking.
