Weekend Interview: Jevian Toledo

Jevian Toledo capped a breakout year in 2015 when he topped the rider standings at Laurel Park’s fall meeting with 48 victories and purses of more than $1.5 million.

The 21-year-old native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, came to the U.S. in 2013 and won 128 races that season. He rode Miss Behaviour to victory in the Grade 3 Charles Town Oaks and Stormin Monarcho in the Richard Small Stakes in 2014 and rode a career-best 178 winners in 2015.

Toledo recently took some time out of his busy schedule to talk with This Is Horse Racing intern and Delaware Valley University student Shayna Tiller about his career, goals and what he enjoys away from racing.

Saturday Special – January 16

Saturdays like this don’t come around too often. Not only does the day feature some top-tier racing that we’ve previewed in this week’s edition of Saturday Special presented by Pin Oak Stud, home to Alternation, Broken Vow and Cowboy Call, but it ends with the 45th annual presentation of the Eclipse Awards.

…And the snow

Writing about winter’s arrival in the Northeast seems a bit clichéd. Alright, maybe not clichéd but perhaps a little too easy. Oh well.

The cold…

You know that day when you step outside, walk less than 100 yards and immediately realize how unprepared you are for winter?

Chrome connections root from afar

The team at Taylor Made Farm got more than its fair share of adrenaline this past weekend. Some of the boost came from the buzz and anticipation in the waning hours before the five-day Keeneland January sale started its run Monday. Otherwise it came as they watched, from wherever they were scattered around Central Kentucky, California Chrome make a winning comeback thousands of miles away.

Saturday Special – January 9

The highly anticipated return of 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome marks a fairly busy Saturday in the world of racing, from coast to coast and around the world. Saturday Special presented by Pin Oak Stud, home of Alternation, Broken Vow and Cowboy Cal, sets the stage for stakes action at Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Aqueduct and elsewhere.

First run, second run

Simply put, there is no substitute for good friends.

The morning of New Year’s Eve a text message came in from one such friend, Rick Jordan.

“Hey, let’s do something totally crazy to start off the New Year by meeting Charlie at 4:45 in the morning, knocking out 5-mile run. What do you think? Who’s in?”
