The ‘Lovable’ Jockey

- -

I like James Graham. I like his work ethic. I like his attitude. I like his spirit. I like his driving finish when money is on the line.

The 41-year-old changed his life when toiling as a jockey in Ireland, came here for a fresh start, a new look, a different vibe, and has made it. No Classics, no Breeders’ Cup wins, probably not a ticket to the Hall of Fame but a strong and steady journeyman, making a living and earning checks for others trying to earn checks and make a living.

Fresh off his third riding title at the Fair Grounds, Graham has returned to Kentucky for his annual stint at Keeneland where he’s already won three races. I caught up with Graham last week and talked about everything – from what he eats for breakfast to losing a good friend to what he would be doing if he wasn’t riding races. Hint, he says he’d make a good bank robber. Really.
