He’s either a freak or he’s crazy

Sometimes I find stuff on my computer, labeled, “Extras.” Today, trying to find something else, I found “LoPresti Extras” in the Saratoga 2012 archives on my desktop. This a story Charlie LoPresti told me about Morton Fink’s homebred Wise Dan after the eventual Horse of the year won the Fourstardave at Saratoga last summer. We were somewhere in the caverns of the Saratoga grandstand, heading to the test barn and LoPresti was on a roll about the horse’s life.

In anticipation of Wise Dan’s attempt to push his win streak to seven when he lines up in the Firecracker at Churchill Downs Saturday…

“When this horse was a 3-year-old, he ran off with a kid on the training track at Keeneland. He was trying to make him change leads and he ran off with him three times, that kid came back, he was white as that door, he said, ‘This son of a gun is either a freak or he’s crazy.’

“We ran him at Turfway and he ran a bad fourth, he was down on the inside, just buried, and Mr. Fink was disappointed, he said, ‘Maybe we ought to run him for 30.’ I said, ‘Give me one more chance.’ He came back and broke his maiden by 15. He was down on him, just because I had been telling him how good I thought he was, but he was tough to deal with, I told Mr. Fink, ‘He’s either really good or a morning glory.’ Then he ran Derby Day in the mud and got hurt, then we gave him all that time and he came back and won the Phoenix and the rest is history.”

Watch Wise Dan win the Fourstardave.
