Only two shopping days until Christmas and the next-to-last Saturday of 2017 to keep racing fans busy and distracted in advance of the holiday. News of the passing of trainer LeRoy Jolley at the age of 80 Wednesday in upstate New York immediately reminded us of a conversation with the Hall of Fame horsemen back in late August 2016.

Racing lost one of its most colorful characters this week with the passing of Charles Cella, the longtime president and chairman of Oaklawn Park, another piece of the game’s great quilt left with a big void.
