The word came a little after the United Nations Stakes in early July at Monmouth Park. The race that was the same spot Main Sequence announced himself in a bit way to North America a year earlier would prove to be the final act of his brilliant career cut short by injury.
The close of Main Sequence’s racing career was announced July 13 in Joe Clancy’s story titled “Main Sequence retired with tendon injury” and it comes in as the fourth most read piece at This Is Horse Racing for 2015. Filled with facts and statistics about Main Sequence’s career – one highlighted by two Eclipse Awards and four straight Grade 1 victories in 2014 – also hit on the emotion from one of the people who knew the horse best.
Graham Motion said it was an honor to train Main Sequence, who won nine times in 21 starts and earned $3,428,666.
“He is one of best horses I ever trained,” Motion said. “Obviously I’m going to have frustration that Dubai didn’t work out. He was a champion, he went out a champion and you don’t get to train many champions.”
