Shapazian’s Belmont picks – June 3

- -

One week to go until the final jewel of the Triple Crown and a spectacular afternoon of racing, but first things first and a 10-race Saturday card at Belmont Park.

The Saratoga Special’s John Shapazian serves up his selections for Saturday right here, as always, with analysis of each heat. Good luck.

Race 1
MY UNCLE AL ships in from Santa Anita for a sharp outfit.  CORREJON flashed improved speed in his last effort, may be the one to catch.  HAPPY MATCH is looking like a career maiden at 0-for-11.  3-5-6

Race 2
If moved to the main track, Presumptuous is clearly the horse to beat.  On the lawn, it becomes a paceless race, CAMISOLE worked well May 17, Jose Ortiz may give this filly an aggressive ride for the 11-panel contest.  FURTIVE GLANCE goes out for Bill Mott who seldom wins first out but lands in a soft field.  BLENHEIM PALACE always gets tote action for the Phipps Stable.  4-1-3-8

Race 3
ALL ABOUT ASHLEY wheels back in six days for Gary Gullo could take advantage if there is a pace meltdown.  MONSTER MASH and BREWING will set the early fractions.  3-6-4

Race 4
LEAVEEMATTHEGATE has some back turf efforts that affords him an edge.  FULMER moves to the Linda Rice barn, newly gelded.  CERRETALTO stretches out for his first attempt on the weeds.  1-2-3

Race 5
RIVER DATE will try and take them gate to wire with Manny Franco in the irons.  JOHN’S ISLAND comes off the claim, stretches out a bit.  MARRIAGE FEVER usually puts in a strong performance but is 0/6 at Belmont.  6-7-3

Race 6
VOLATILITY INDEX is a lightly raced 4-year-old filly with lots of upside potential.  CHURCH SOCIAL missed narrowly at Keeneland, will be closing.  LIDO takes on winners for Godolphin.  5-2-4

Race 7
FACT CHECK ships in from Gulfstream, gets Johnny V.  PECULIAR SENSATION has some decent turf efforts last year.  LE GRAND WARRIOR showed some promise in the slop.  4-9-8

Race 8
AUDRIQUE takes a logical class drop for Bobby Ribaudo, draws an outside post, may stalk or go for the top. GOBI cuts back slightly, seven-pound apprentice Hector Diaz has been learning his trade quickly.  SALORI’S BANK fits with these.  10-4-1

Race 9
GOOD SAMARITAN had a sharp effort on the Derby undercard, will try and turn the tables on OSCAR PERFORMANCE from last year’s Breeders’ Cup. The latter must break alertly, did not appear comfortable on the Churchill lawn, may rebound.  BOWIES HERO, the son of Artie Schiller, appears a step slower that the top two.  9-6-2

Race 10
If Saturday’s finale is moved to the main track, WON’T BURN could have them over a barrel.  On the sod, STARSTRUCK was caught wide in his debut, drops in for a tag.  THAYER WEEK may go well for George Weaver. PROGNOSTICATION makes his first start in 2017, has a series of steady works.  16-8-5-10
