Third on the National Steeplechase Association’s all-time training list with more than $7.5 million in lifetime earnings in a career that is now in its fourth decade. Trained Flat Top, who won championships in 1998 and 2002 on the way to $592,000 in career earnings. In 1991, became first woman to win NSA trainer championship. Won inaugural Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase with Census in 1986. Irish native also trained 1996 champion Correggio and major winners Victorian Hill (who led the career earnings list for several years), Master McGrath, Campanile and Declare Your Wish. Former assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard. Finished second to the ultra-dominant Sheppard in race for NSA training championship three times. Former riding instructor in Ireland came to the United States in 1968 after her plans to accompany an Irish show jumper to the Mexico City Olympics fell through. Injuries from a car accident kept her from working for Hall of Fame trainer Burley Cocks in Unionville, Pa., but she later took a job with Cocks’ neighbor, former employee and chief competitor, Sheppard. She stayed with Sheppard for 11 years. Elliot started her first horse in 1979, won her first race – with Too Few Stripes at Kentucky’s High Hope meet – the next year and to date has won 355 NSA jump races (through April 17). Total NSA purse earnings of $7,604,534 (through April 17). She is the first woman trainer to be elected into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame and the second woman (with jockey Julie Krone). She continues a Hall of Fame “tree” of trainers from Cocks to Sheppard to Elliot.
