An excerpt from Missionville

Horseman Alex Brown (also an exercise rider, professor, writer and horse-welfare advocate) wrote a racing novel, Missionville, which was released last year. He sent us an excerpt and a little bit of the thinking behind the book.

Throwback Thursday: The mighty Leaping Frog

In honor of its 40th running this year, the Winterthur Point-to-Point steeplechase meet presents a weekly Steeplechase Throwback Thursday feature. We’ll look back on historic moments, horses and people in the jumping game – at least a few connected to the race meet on the grounds of the famed Winterthur Museum and Gardens just north of Wilmington, Del. This year’s races are Sunday, May 6.

Steeplechase horse Leaping Frog won six of nine starts over fences in 1979, placed in the three races he lost, gave away heaps of weight, and led the circuit in earnings. But wasn’t a champion.

And that’s a shame.

Far from ordinary

Back in mid-June 2016 a colt named Contrarytoordinary battled throughout a $21,000 maiden race at Lone Star Park with Sophisticatedbling before pulling away in the stretch to win his debut by three-quarters of a length.

Throwback Thursday: The first Winterthur Point-to-Point

In honor of its 40th running this year, the Winterthur Point-to-Point steeplechase meet presents a weekly Steeplechase Throwback Thursday feature. We’ll look back on historic moments, horses and people in the jumping game – at least a few connected to the race meet on the grounds of the famed Winterthur Museum and Gardens just north of Wilmington, Del. This year’s races are Sunday, May 6.

You’ve got to start somewhere. The first Winterthur Point-to-Point shared a page deep in the Wilmington Morning News sports section with coverage of pacer No No Yankee’s upset loss to Richmond at Brandywine Raceway – in front of 5,373 – the night before. The handle was $481,589, presumably all on-track.

Farm boy Gun Runner adapts to new life

As brilliant as he is Gun Runner does not talk, so Three Chimneys Farm stallion manager Sandy Hatfield put his thoughts about retirement into words Thursday afternoon.

“Whatever you want to do is fine,” she said, paraphrasing the 2017 Horse of the Year’s opinion on turnout, a visit to the breeding shed and a life without a daily gallop or someone walking up with a saddle. “It’s not a big deal. Show me what to do.”

Chasing 100

Afternoon showers and driving evening rains left the crimson-colored racing surface at Pocono Downs a sea of slop for the 2013 Breeders’ Crown. Under the glow of the track lights, the surface shined like a marble in the sun and around it, a few thousand racing fans braved the cold and wind for a chance to see the fastest trotters and pacers in the world make their final bids for divisional titles.
