No ‘Disguise’ necessary
Drs. Bill Wilmot and Joan Taylor stopped by Linda Rice’s barn the morning of last Saturday’s Busher Stakes at Aqueduct and Midnight Disguise, a multi-generational homebred they initially planned to sell but kept, couldn’t get enough of the husband and wife team from Stepwise Farm in Saratoga Springs.

Did Saturday’s smorgasbord of stakes whet the appetite for what is certain to be a busy spring leading up to the 2018 Triple Crown? If so you’re in luck with plenty more top-tier races on the not-so-distant horizon, including the Gotham, San Felipe and Tampa Bay Derby on tap this coming Saturday.

Not so fast
The sound of the snowplows outside the window started relatively early, at least by “offseason” standards here in Saratoga. Up and down the nearby streets they went as the coffee pot in the kitchen bubbled and burped.
Far from ordinary
Back in mid-June 2016 a colt named Contrarytoordinary battled throughout a $21,000 maiden race at Lone Star Park with Sophisticatedbling before pulling away in the stretch to win his debut by three-quarters of a length.

The second month of 2018 is nearly complete and the combination of unseasonably warmer than normal temperatures over the weekend and the fact that February is the shortest one of the year has everyone thinking spring. It might be a tad early for that, with March on the way and lots of top racing at the world’s top wintertime venues still to come. But it was nice to dream, even for a bit.

The Archives: 2018 Hall of Fame finalists
The final ballot is out and the task of picking the 2018 Hall of Fame class is in the hands of the voters, who will select this year’s group from the 10 finalists announced Thursday by the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame Nominating Committee.
