TIHR Top 10 for 2018: No. 10

Three days before Christmas means one thing and one thing only at This Is Horse Racing. No, it’s not time for a slate of four bowl games, last-minute shopping quality time on the couch or perhaps a little jazzed up eggnog – not that those are bad things. The end of 2018 means it is time to start the countdown of the most well read stories of the year here at TIHR.

Farewell Friend

Rick Violette passed away more than a month ago. That still seems difficult to believe, let alone write. The news of Rick’s passing trickled in the afternoon of Oct. 21 through the usual channels, by phone calls from friends, social media or news reports online, and hit the game hard.

The race for the National Steeplechase Association’s leading trainer and jockey – the owner’s crown was settled a few weeks ago – came down to the final meeting of the season and the two men who won in 2017 also came out on top in 2018.

Big City: McCarthy gets Breeders’ Cup win

Michael McCarthy walked out of the paddock, through the tunnel and stopped halfway between the saddling area and racetrack. He’d just finished tacking up Paved for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf and watched as the rest of the field filed past on the way to the post parade for the fourth of nine World Championships races Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Frankie Dettori arrived Stateside this week knowing the tall tasks facing Enable.
