Changing gears

It’s been a whirlwind of a week so far and Independence Day officially marks the start of the second half.

The first half was the hard half. The second should be a bit easier.

The first half involved saying goodbye, celebrating a life lived to the fullest, with sorrow and sadness.

The second half is all about reuniting with old friends, starting a life together, with joy and happiness.

Saratoga institution

The question came via text, two days after my mother passed away.

“Are you and Liz in Saratoga Sunday night? Free?”

A short break, then “Quick.”

Final countdown begins

Broussard aims high after riding debut

Ashley Broussard walked out of the jocks’ room before the ninth race Friday evening at Churchill Downs and the enormity of what was about to happen hit her.

Spread is LoPresti’s main concern

Charlie LoPresti didn’t seem overly worried on a relatively quiet morning at Keeneland Friday when talking about the weight Wise Dan would carry in Saturday evening’s Firecracker Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Robbie Walsh: 10 that got me here

Robbie Walsh has ridden plenty of good horses. A native of Ireland who arrived in the U.S. in 2002, Walsh has sat on two Eclipse Award finalists and goes into the summer steeplechase season riding what he calls “the best horse he’s ever sat on.”

Coming home to say goodbye

The jabs were light but predictable. Hard really to call them jabs, considering the source.

They always came at an awkward time. Close to the end of visits. Not the last day, but not the beginning either. So essentially timed perfectly.

Not much weight behind them, yet packing powerful meaning. Again considering the source.
