Tuesday was a pretty big day in the world of football, or as we say in the states, soccer. The day was noteworthy because it marked the 100-day mark until the action starts in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, probably the world’s most watched and followed sporting activity.
The rains came in Southern California and snow and ice met significant parts of the East, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic well into Monday morning, ah the joys of what is the never-ending winter of 2014.
March, it just sounds so much better than December, January or February. The time change is just around the corner, spring not far from that (we hope) and with it even more meaningful racing over the jumps and on the flat.
Conversations with oneself on the run – literally in this case since it was a rare day to get out for a good 30 minutes without fear of freezing or crashing on the ice – always yield the best results.

Monday morning brought colder temperatures back, some snow flurries and a reminder that it’s still a long way to go until the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
The Winter Olympics in Sochi are winding down and it’s almost March. Triple Crown prep races get a little tougher, a little more important and with plenty more consequences for those who fare well and those who don’t. The Risen Star and Fountain of Youth are on tap, with big fields and plenty of would-be contenders looking to secure coveted points to gain a spot in the gate the first Saturday in May.
The winter weather that’s wreaked havoc up and down the East Coast seemingly since Thanksgiving and now well into February may be a blessing or a curse in the case of La Verdad.
