Parting Glass Racing and the Academy of Lifelong Learning at Empire State College are hosting a Pre-Derby Handicapping Educational Seminar to prepare everyone for the Kentucky Derby at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Parting Glass in Saratoga Springs.
ST Publishing’s Tom Law, managing editor of This Is Horse Racing and The Saratoga Special, will join Jeff Carle and Seth Merrow for the panel discussion.
The seminar will begin with a “How to” or Handicapping 101 for all the novices and will continue with analysis of key Kentucky Derby prep races, including the Wood Memorial, Blue Grass and Santa Anita Derby. The event is free and open to the public.
Law is one of The Special’s regular handicappers and also was a handicapper for The Saratogian’s Pink Sheet from 1995 to 2012.
A native of Saratoga and the former managing editor at Thoroughbred Times in Lexington, Ky., Law has been honored with an Eclipse Award, Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Breeders’ Cup writing awards during his career.
Carle is an ex-jockey who began making guest appearances on Capital OTB-TV. He was added to the network’s lineup in 2008 as a co-host on “Call To the Post.” He subsequently produced and co-hosted “Racetrips,” and is currently a regular on “Handicapper’s Report.”
Merrow is the founder and publisher of the popular horse racing news website Equidaily.com. He is also a longtime host and handicapper on Capital OTB-TV and is a regular guest on Sirius/XM’s “At the Races with Steve Byk.”
