Thursday’s Saratoga picks – Sept. 3

- -

A super soak of rain ushered in the final week of racing for 2020 at Saratoga Race Course and lingering showers throughout the day Wednesday could cause further havoc into Thursday and the 10-race card that awaits.

Six of the 10 races Thursday are carded for the grass, including the co-featured $100,000 P.G. Johnson for 2-year-old fillies.

Seven juveniles were entered for the 1 1/16-mile stakes, including a pair for the main track, and if it stays on the grass Saratoga maiden winners Invincible Gal and Plum Ali rate the edge. The P.G. Johnson goes as the third race with a post time of 2:17 p.m. ET.

The $100,000 Park Avenue division of the New York Stallion Series shares the card and goes as the sixth race at 4:01 p.m. A field of seven was entered, including unbeaten Finger Lakes shipped Spin A Yarn, stakes winner Big Q and three-time winner and recent claim Officer Hutchy.

The handicappers muddled their way through the day Wednesday and came up with a few winners. Tom Law, Charles Bedard and Rob Whitlock came up with two winners apiece, while John Shapazian tabbed a single.

John leads heading into Day 36 with a record of 117-for-350, a strike rate of 33.4 percent. Tom runs second at 105 wins while Charles is third at 96 and Rob fourth at 84.

The handicappers are inching closer to their 2019 totals with four days remaining in the meet. Last year John led the way with 132 winners (from 404 races, a 32.7 percent strike rate). Tom picked 109 winners last year, while Charles came up with 93 and Rob 80.
