The Sunday Special & Picks – July 31

What about an encore?
How about that Saturday for Team Asmussen? Jackie’s Warrior toyed with his opponents winning the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt and Epicenter made amends – at least a little bit – for two tough beats in the classics with a statement victory in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy.
Steve Asmussen could make it three Saratoga stakes on the final weekend of July in Sunday’s Grade 2 Amsterdam when he runs last year’s Grade 1 Hopeful winner Gunite against eight others.
The Amsterdam goes as the ninth race with the Grade 2 Bowling Green going as the eight.
Our handicappers are continuing at a hot pace. We heard that after Saturday’s card they hold three of the top four spots among all public handicappers at the meet. And get this; the leader isn’t John Shapazian. That’s pretty salty.
Here’s your Special for Sunday, July 31. Good luck.

Worth Repeating
“He’s like Lebron James.”
Bloodstock agent Mike Ryan after Jackie’s Warrior cruised in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt

“There was a lot more horse there today.”
Scott Blasi, assistant to Steve Asmussen, after Epicenter won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy over Zandon, Tawny Port and Early Voting

By the Numbers
5: Wins from as many starts at Saratoga for Jackie’s Warrior. The wins? How about the Saratoga Special, Hopeful, Amsterdam, H. Allen Jerkens and Vanderbilt.

25.40: Dollar payoff on a $2 win bet for Ricochet in Saturday’s 10th – the winner picked in The Saratoga Special by Rob Whitlock and Jessica Paquette.
