The Special expands for 2019

Extra time in upstate New York this coming summer for the Saratoga Race Course meeting means extra editions of The Saratoga Special on tap for 2019.

The New York Racing Association’s decision to stretch the Saratoga meet from Thursday, July 11 to Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2 – while maintaining recent tradition with the same 40-day season – will increase The Special’s publishing slate from 29 issues to 34 this year.

The expanded schedule begins with the first print edition Opening Day through the first Sunday of the meet July 14 and will continue with the four issues per week plan through the bulk of the meet.

The Special will again include print editions for the two-day Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale of selected yearlings Monday, Aug. 5 and Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The final week editions will be digital only, available through thisishorseracing.com and through our daily email announcement.

The 2019 Saratoga meet marks the 19th year of The Saratoga Special, ST Publishing’s flagship publication that covers the summer season from Broadway to the backstretch. The Special reaches beyond upstate New York with its popular digital edition posted online every day.

Saratoga’s racing season was extended this year by NYRA, moving to a five-day week schedule from its traditional six-day week. Dark days are now Mondays and Tuesdays, with the exception of Closing Day Monday, Sept. 2. The highlights of the Saratoga meet include Whitney Day Saturday, Aug. 3, Alabama Day Saturday Aug. 17, Travers Day Saturday, Aug. 24 and Woodward Day Saturday, Aug. 31.
