Slip Away wins at Colonial

Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s Slip Away extended his winning streak to six with a stakes score in Sunday’s $50,000 Zeke Ferguson Memorial at Colonial Downs for trainer Tom Voss and jockey Chip Miller.


Champion claimer of 2008, Slip Away built a big early lead in the Ferugson and could no be caught as he scored by 5 lengths as a slight 9-5 favorite. Mixed Up (Danielle Hodsdon) finished second with Swagger Stick (Willie Dowling) third. The winner paid $5.80 and covered the 2 1/4 miles in 4:12.95. Slip Away dominated the claiming ranks late last season (he could have been claimed for $10,000 at Foxfield in September) winning his final four starts, and opened 2009 with a starter allowance score at High Hope.

In other Colonial action Sunday, Eldon Farm’s Aero (Paddy Young) won the $15,000 maiden hurdle for trainer Doug Fout. Third at Fair Hill IN May, the winner came from off the pace and outran Meshwaar (Gregg Ryan) by 3 3/4 lengths with Class Crash (Bernie Dalton) third in 4:18.22 for 2 1/4 miles. The winner paid $13.60.

 Steeplechasers went to work on the flat too as  Bob Blanchard’s Monsieur Henri (Xavier Aizpuru) roared from last in a field of eight to win a $7,500 starter allowance turf race for horses that had started as an NSA meet. The 6-year-old scored by 2 lengths over The Price Of Love (Hodsdon) with Indy Run (Roderick Mackenzie) third. The winner paid $17.40 and covered the 1 1/2 miles in 2:46.68. Janet Elliot trained the winner.
