Shapazian’s Belmont picks – May 6

Belmont Park rolls out an 11-race card for Kentucky Derby Day and The Saratoga Special’s John Shapazian is on top of the action with full selections.

Shapazian, The Saratoga Special’s leading handicapper several years running who tabbed an area-based 130 winners in 2016 at Saratoga, will provide race-by-race selections for the weekend cards at Belmont. Here are his picks for Saturday, May 6.

Race 1
PERFORMANCE BONUS rates the edge for Chad Brown.  PROUD ZIP becomes the horse to beat if moved to the main track.  SOUTHSIDE WARRIOR has had some decent attempts at Fairgrounds.  9-6-3

Race 2
BUILT TO SUIT moves off the rail after being DQ’d in his debut.  SUMMER MISCHIEF has a series of steady drills, could come out running.  JEWEL CAN DISCO flashed speed last fall, will be a pace factor.  6-2-7

Race 3
MINSKY MONMENT comes off a 10-month hiatus, the top pick on any racing surface.  FOLLOW THE SIGNS an uncoupled stable mate of the above takes blinkers off.  RED KNIGHT has worked well in Florida.  Bill Mott seldom wins with first timers but this could be an exception.  6-3-4

Race 4
SEA CALISI is the class of the field, maybe better than these.  SUFFUSED steps up after two sharp efforts.  ZIPESSA could be the one to beat if moved to the main track.  7-6-2

Race 5
MAKING HAVOC will be sent from her inside post, has run well in the off going.  SWEETRAYOFSUNSHINE comes off a Contessa claim, drops nine pounds from last.  DEAN’S TICKET will also appreciate any moisture in the track.  2-6-5

Race 6
NEVISIAN SKY has the most upside potential in the field.  H MAN comes off two sharp efforts in the slop.  DUQUESNE WHISTLE stumbled in last.  8-1-3

Race 7
If moved to the main track POTFOLIO MANAGER is the horse to beat.  On turf, COMMEND may rebound after his last effort.  AIR VICE MARSHAL has not been seen in a year, hard to gauge.  PUISSANT had a couple of fairs efforts at Gulfstream.  7-8-4-5

Race 8
LUCKY LOTTO switches barns and drops, rates an edge.  ERIK THE RED appears in good form.  BEST PLAY may get a minor award.   7-2-3

Race 9
In a wide-open event where you can make a case for many, PAPA SHOT draws an outside post, maybe stalking.  WINE NOT has run well at Belmont and in the mud.  CORE PORTFOLIO will be sent from the start.

Race 10
CONNECT comes off a sharp April 30 work, clearly the one to beat.  MOYAYMEN makes his 4-year-old debut after a year that started with lots of promise before tailing off.  FRAMMENTO may improve off a dull effort.  4-3-7

Race 11
DOYOUKNOWSOMETHING is the horse to beat on the main track.  On the lawn, TIME TEST makes his stateside debut for Juddmonte Farms.  HIGHLAND SKY will be closing.  JAY GATSBY would be no surprise.  6-8-9-2

Race 12
CONSUMERCONFIDENCE has some fair efforts on dirt and grass.  ASTUTE WARRIOR had a sharp work on April 24, may be ready for a “huge” win.  BASELINE goes first time for a tag.  8-5-11
