Shapazian’s Belmont picks – June 17

- -

Belmont Park will feel drastically different Saturday, a week removed from the Belmont Stakes, but a strong nine-race card awaits horseplayers and The Saratoga Special’s John Shapazian.

The $100,000 Dancin Renee for New York-bred fillies and mares tops the day’s action, which also includes several turf allowance and maiden races. Here are John’s picks for Saturday, good luck.

Race 1
FROST WISE showed improved speed in last, has a cozy outside post, Javier Castellano in the irons.  QUICK ON THE DRAW worked sharply June 10 at the Spa, adds blinkers.  COOL AS YOU LIKE switches to the Jimmy Toner barn, promising debut last fall.  7-8-6

Race 2
AIR VICE MARSHAL is the obvious choice on turf and the main oval, impressive performance in his first stateside race in the slop.  TOGA CHALLENGER (main track only) stretches out, will be a factor if off the turf.  CERISE’S PRINCE is in peak form, will be part of the early pace.  BERKS COUNTY was over his head as part of the Preakness undercard.  1-6-8-5

Race 3
CLIPTHECOUPONANNIE knows how to find the winner’s circle, 5-for-6, can boss these.  COURT DANCER is the one to catch, goes out for the always-dangerous Jason Servis outfit.  SUPER ALLISON comes off the bench, should take advantage of a pace melt down.  2-3-5

Race 4
NOW IN A DRIVE will try and take them gate to wire but needs a firm turf course, Brian Lynch having a solid Belmont meet.  SENTRY is the horse to beat, has lots of upside potential.  LUCULLAN may take to the lawn, will be a major factor on the main track.  7-8-1

Race 5
ADDICTIVE returns from a trip north of the border where she got fried on the front end, choice on turf or dirt, Bill Mott operation may start heating up.  ELECTRIFIED, lightly raced 5-year-old, has some fair attempts last year.  MAJESTIC BLOOM just missed at this level in her last.  7-5-11

Race 6
DELTALINA drops in for a tag, picks up Johnny V., the horse to beat on any surface.  ASIAN’S WAY (main track only), fresh off a John Toscano claim, would be no surprise on the main track.  Camera shy MAY FLOWERS and TREATHERLIKESTAR may get minor awards.  2-13-8-7

Race 7
YELLOW CHIPS ships in from Gulfstream, is afforded a slight edge.  ROCKFORD appears in top form, will appreciate any moisture in the track.  GENTRIFY will be the early pace setter, could take them all the way.  3-6-5

Race 8
JOSEPHINE’S MOMENT comes in from the west coast, the one to beat if washed off the lawn.  On turf it becomes a highly competitive event, GIOIA STELLA did not like the Belmont slop in her last.  PENJADE comes off a narrow score.  PUCA would be no surprise.  8-6-2-7

Race 9
SCARLETT JO HANSEN fired a bullet June 8, adds blinkers, drops seven pounds, first time for a tag, lots to like at a price.  GOT THE GIST tries the lawn off works at Monmouth for Chad Brown.  CIAO BELLA MIA makes her 2017 debut, may show improvement.  7-6-1
