Shapazian’s Belmont picks – June 18

- -

The day after unexpected heavy rains forced the cancellation of the final six races, Belmont Park is back with a 10-race card Sunday for Father’s Day.

The Saratoga Special’s John Shapazian, who channeled his inner Charlie Brown with a “good grief” about the rain, is back with his selections for card. Here’s wishing all the dads out there a great day. Enjoy and good luck.

Race 1
BREAKIN DAYLIGHT is afforded an edge, the son of More Than Ready should take to the turf.  HEMP HEMP HURRAY, by Artie Schiller, debuts for Wesley Ward, Joel Rosario in the irons.  MORRISON draws the outside post for Joe Sharp also figures close.  5-2-8

Race 2
LUCKY LOTTO may get a more aggressive ride with Richardo Santana up for David Jacobson, will be stalking pace setter, BRANDED HAND.  The latter will appreciate any moisture in the surface, cutting back to 7 furlongs.  ERIK THE RED will be looking for the early leaders to fade in the lane.  1-4-6

Race 3
HONOR WAY takes on winners after an impressive maiden score at Gulfstream.  LUZ MIMI makes her second start in New York for Jeremiah Englehart, who is having a solid Belmont meet.  ASIAN’S WAY will probably be set from the rail, may prefer a shorter distance.  5-3-1

Race 4
ETERNAL VOW shows a series of steady drills, goes out for Mike Hushion. GAME FACTOR cuts back after disappointing in her last two efforts, has a break in her work tab.  JET A PRINCESS did not take to the slop, tries the lawn today.  8-3-5

Race 5
MINSKY MOMENT had a sharp effort in an off the turf event, can boss these if he takes to the weeds for Chad Brown.  APPEALIMG BRIEFS adds blinkers, returns to state-bred company.  MILLIES PARTY BOY ran well at long odds last fall, may run well today, could light up the tote board.  3-5-8

Race 6
YOUR LOVE draws the outside post after a handy maiden victory, could be some serious upside potential.  DAWN THE DESTROYER has a sharp work June 10 for Kiaran McLaughlin, as does ASPEN HILLTOP June 11 for Gary Contessa.  7-5-6

Race 7
ANIMAL APPEAL will try and take them gate to wire.  COLORFUL CHARADES tries the turf for her first start of 2017 after facing Grade 1 competition last year.  BATTLEMENT has two dull stateside efforts, Juddmonte filly may improve.  8-9-3

Race 8
If moved to the main track, WEEKEND HIDEAWAY is the obvious choice.  On turf, PROJECTED is the horse to beat in what appears to be a paceless renewal of the Grade 3 Poker.  BALLAGH ROCKS had a rough trip at Churchill.  NIGHT PROWLER maybe the pace setter by default, draws the hedge.  5-2-3-1

Race 9
THREEFIVEINDIA may have needed his last, disappointed at odds on, another try today.  ALL STAR RED goes turf to dirt for Rudy Rodriguez.  READY FOR RYE has worked well for his first start in seven months.  4-9-8

Race 10
RAPSCALLION ships up from south Florida, drops to a more realistic level, attracts Irad Ortiz.  RUNAWAY POSSE takes a huge drop, Dylan Davis gets a leg up from Danny Gargan.  TIZ A CHANCE may complete exotic wagers.  2-12-3
