Royal Ascot: Halfway home

Hump Day. Two days down. Three to go.

Acapulco put America on the board Wednesday, winning the Queen Mary Stakes. Bet into favoritism, the daughter of Scat Daddy led a group of 10 while her stablemate Bruised Orange led the other group of 10. Bruised Orange faded and Acapulco ran off the screen. Ryan Moore described her simply, “all speed.”

Free Eagle won a thriller over The Grey Gatsby in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Frankie Dettori, aboard Western Hymn, hemmed in The Grey Gatsby just long enough to change the final results. Finally through, The Grey Gatsby rallied but couldn’t reel back Free Eagle, who summed up his name with a stellar and smooth flight.

A race later, Ryan Moore did it again, scoring aboard our tip, 8-1 Gm Hopkins. A race later, Dettori had his 50th win at Royal Ascot when nailing Always Smile in the finale.

Race 1. 9:30 a.m. Norfolk Stakes. Group 2 stakes for 2-year-olds, ripping 5 furlongs. King Of Rooks won his two most recent starts impressively, like seeing Superman fly over your house. Jazz Legend won his debut impressively. Bet the exacta and take the rest of the day off.

Race 2. 10:05. Tercentenary Stakes. Group 3 stakes for 3-year-olds going a mile and a quarter. Stronach Stable is represented by Don Camillo, a son of Ghoszapper. Peacock represents The Queen. This writer wrote “Bet” in his notes for Disegno on his Horse Tracker account. That was after his debut, he won his next start at a short price, then hit the board another three times. Maybe today is the day to “Bet” again…

Race 3. 10:40. Ribblesdale Stakes. Group 2 stakes for fillies. A J Suited Partnership represented by longshot Brandybend. Curvy seeks her fourth straight for Coolmore, David Wachman and Ryan Moore. Pleascach is an airplane. Or aeroplane as they say over there. We’ll use Pandora and Pleascach.

Race 4. 11:20. The Ascot Gold Cup. Two and a half miles. Awesome race. Willie Mullins pulled one off already, he returns with Simenon. Tough? He turned the double in 2012, winning the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra in four days. Yes, four days. Of course, he didn’t win again for two years, taking the Grimes Hurdle in July. Mizzou seeks his fifth win for Jon Kelly. Any or all can win. Forgotten Rules continues his ascent, from bumper winner to Royal Ascot contender. Undeated thus far, the journey continues. Enjoy, this is not 6 furlongs on the dirt.

Race 5. 12:00 p.m. Britannia Stakes. Thirty 3-year-olds rip a mile. Pick one out in the parade ring and then watch his trip. Even better, box four in a trifecta and watch their trips.

Race 6. 12:35. King George V Stakes. Three-year-olds get another opportunity, going a mile and a half in the finale. Ryan Moore could win another here, taking Dissolution for Sir Michael Stoute.
