Pies Against COVID-19 to aid backstretch workers

The Battle for the Backside: Pies Against COVID-19 Sponsored by Runhappy will be raising funds for the Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation through donations surrounding a charity pie-eating contest at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

All donations will benefit Thoroughbred racing’s backstretch community in an effort to alleviate financial burdens incurred during the novel coronavirus pandemic. All donations are tax deductible and donors will receive acknowledgment from The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation upon receipt.

Battle for the Backside: Pies Against COVID-19 offers racing fans the chance to support any of the 10 entrants, each of whom will attempt to be the fastest pie eater of the field. Proof of each fundraising “bet,” which carry no odds nor any financial payout, entails a screenshot or receipt of donation to The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation sent to the event’s social media pages and will serve as a chance to win one of a variety of prizes.

These prizes include but are not limited to:

  • Speightstown halter
  • 2014 Breeders’ Cup hat donated by Nicole Meiner
  • 2015 Monmouth Park Bob Baffert jersey (American Pharoah’s winning Haskell year), donated by Penelope Miller
  • 2018 Breeders’ Cup hat donated by Penelope Miller
  • Betting voucher donated by Sophie Shore
  • Large American Pharoah photo donated by Pyrois Media
  • Large Breeders’ Cup World Championships jacket donated by Alicia Wincze-Hughes

Entries for prizes are as follows:

  • Any donation over $20 = one entry to the prize pack; each additional $10 gains supplementary entry.
  • Any donation over $50 = one entry to win Speightstown Halter, each additional $25 gains supplementary entry
  • Sharing/retweeting post about event + following us = one entry to win 2014 Breeders’ Cup hat
  • Everyone who correctly picks the winner gets an entry to win betting voucher
  • Additionally, an eBay auction of the remaining prizes will be set up on Saturday, April 25 following the contest to raise additional funds for The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation
