Monday’s Saratoga picks – Aug. 27

- -

The penultimate week of the 2018 Saratoga Race Course meeting draws to a close Monday with a nine-race card topped by a strong New York-bred allowance that features the top three from last month’s John Morrissey and the $100,000 Better Talk Now for 3-year-olds on the grass.

A field of five is entered for that state-bred allowance, which goes as the fourth on the nine-race program.

Morrissey winner Weekend Hideaway goes for his sixth win in 12 starts at Saratoga in the 6 1/2-furlong allowance against familiar foes Eye Luv Lulu and Celtic Chaos. T Loves A Fight, seventh in the Morrissey, and Finger Lakes shipper Saratoga Giro are also entered in the $85,000 allowance.

A field of 10 entered the restricted Better Talk Now, a 1-mile event for 3-year-olds who have not on a stakes at a mile or over. Strike Power, winner of the Grade 3 Swale and runner-up in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth this winter, is the 7-2 morning-line favorite for his turf debut. Other top contenders are Woodbine shipper Rose’s Vision, Grade 2 Hall of Fame sixth Have It All and last-out winner Prioritize.

The Saratoga Special’s handicappers worked through Travers Weekend trying to dig up some winners and offer their picks below.

John Shapazian continues to lead at a torrid pace with 94 winners from the 330 races run at the meet through Sunday. Charles Bedard is second with 77 winners with Tom Law (75) and Donald Phillips (57) completing the quartet.
