Chad Brown might need to channel his inner Todd Pletcher, Nick Zito and D. Wayne Lukas in Friday's $200,000 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes albeit on a slightly smaller stage.
Pletcher (twice), Zito and Lukas each sent out five starters in America's biggest race, the Kentucky Derby, during their careers. Brown will send out five in the biggest race of the day today if he runs Takeover Target, Startup Nation, Night Prowler, Croninthebarbarian and Winter Springs in the Grade 2 Hall of Fame.
He's never run that many in a race, never mind a stakes, and freely concedes that it will hurt his win percentage with four all but guaranteed of coming home a loser. Such is life when you train nearly 200 horses for numerous clients.
"As of right now it looks that way, I need to talk to all my clients over the next day, look at the race and decide what they want to do," Brown said Wednesday morning after he walked back to the barn when he finished watching a set train on the Oklahoma Training Track. "It's a strange situation because there's not a lot out there in this division."
