A field of 10 led by Wood Memorial winner and narrow morning-line favorite Tacitus and Preakness Stakes winner War Of Will was entered Tuesday for the 151st running of the Belmont Stakes that brings a memorable 2019 Triple Crown to a close Saturday at Belmont Park.
The 10 3-year-olds, which include five runners who competed in the Kentucky Derby and three from the Preakness, were entered and revealed during the post draw at Citi Field prior to baseball game between the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.
Juddmonte Farm’s Tacitus drew post 10 and was pegged as the 9-5 favorite for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott and jockey Jose Ortiz. The son of Tapit and the first foal out of Grade 1 winner Close Hatches crossed the finish fourth in the Kentucky Derby and was elevated to third after the disqualification of Maximum Security.
Tacitus, who has trained at Belmont since the Derby and breezed a bullet 5 furlongs in 1:00.42 Sunday, won three straight before that race including the Grade 2 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby.
War Of Will, impeded the most during Maximum Security’s eventful run in the Kentucky Derby, bounced back from an eight-place showing at the finish (placed seventh) to win the Preakness three weeks ago in Baltimore. The son of War Front drew post 9 – not the 1-hole as he did in the Derby and Preakness – and is the 2-1 second choice for owner Gary Barber, trainer Mark Casse and jockey Tyler Gaffalione.
The only other member of the field at single-digit odds is Japan’s Master Fencer, who finished one spot ahead of War Of Will in the Derby after a belated run past tired rivals in the stretch. The Japanese-bred son of Just A Way is 8-1 on the line with Julien Leparoux named on the return call for owner Katsumi Yoshizawa and trainer Koichi Tsunoda.
Three runners were pegged at 12-1 – surprise Preakness runner-up Everfast, Fountain of Youth runner-up and Preakness eighth Bourbon War and Peter Pan runner-up Sir Winston.
The 1 1/2-mile Belmont goes as the 11th of 13 races Saturday at Belmont with a post time of approximately 6:35 p.m. NBC and NBC Sports Network will broadcast the Belmont and the strong supporting undercard, which includes seven other Grade 1 stakes. Coverage runs from 2:30-4 p.m. EDT on NBC Sports Network with NBC picking it from 4-7 p.m.
