Late Friday morning the sales barns at Fasig-Tipton were humming. By the afternoon they were packed. Yearlings were everywhere. Consignors hustled and agents stacked up waiting to look at horses in lines almost as long as TSA security at LaGuardia International Airport on a weekday morning.
A walk from one end of the grounds to the other couldn’t be done quickly and with nearly 300 horses cataloged to sell tonight and Sunday in the New York-bred yearling sale there’s no real need for speed. Agents started to comb through the yearlings once showing started in some of the consignments Thursday afternoon and by Friday with the complete draft on the grounds the place was packed.
The select sale set the tone for sales week with a record median and significant gains in total sales and average price with a very low buyback rate and the New York-bred sale looks to keep the momentum rolling when the first yearling walks into the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Consignors are optimistic the sale will be strong and bounce back from slight decreases last year, when the sale was condensed into a single session when the scheduled opener was scrapped due to severe storms and heavy rain. Well before showing began they knew the crush of potential buyers would arrive.
“That’s the busiest sale of the year as far as showing horses goes,” said Adrian Regan of Hunter Valley Farm.
Demand has risen as pedigrees improved, sire power was boosted and as more and mare athletic and professionally prepped yearlings were pointed to the sale.
“This is one of the strongest New York-bred catalogs pedigree-wise we’ve seen,” said Mike Recio of South Point Sales Agency. “There’s a lot of well-bred fillies in here that would have easily stacked up just as well in (the select sale) as the New York-bred sale. Everybody wants a New York-bred now. It’s a great program and it’s on the rise. I expect the New York-bred sale to be very, very well shopped. You’ll see a lot more pinhookers and end-users.”
