In The Clear

World Of Trouble is fast.

He showed how fast in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens – racing just off the lead through splits of :21.46 and :43.68 before finishing fourth.

The fractions of the Grade 3 Amsterdam going 6 1/2 furlongs July 28 – a race World Of Trouble missed because of a fever – went in :21.28 and :43.92.

Then came Wednesday’s 5 1/2-furlong Quick Call at Saratoga, where World Of Trouble set a cruising pace of :22.68 and :46.03 alone on the lead over the yielding turf course en route to victory in the $100,000 stakes. World Of Trouble got the easy lead in part because of the rain-soaked ground and because he was faster and better than his competition.

World Of Trouble went on a frontrunning mission in the Quick Call, leading at every call and crossing the wire 1 3/4 lengths clear of his fellow Jason Servis-trained, Mike Dubb-co-owned stablemate Fig Jelly.

“The horse came up with a fever two days before the Amsterdam,” Dubb said outside the winner’s circle after the victory. “I knew the Quick Call was out there because of Fig Jelly. I said, ‘look, we’re all dressed up with no place to go.’ This horse is bred for turf, if the fever breaks and we’re OK, let’s go in the Quick Call with both of them. It couldn’t have worked any better.”

That’s for sure.

In his first start on grass, World Of Trouble was sent off as the 8-5 favorite in the field of 11. The son of Kantharos broke well from his rail post under Irad Ortiz Jr. and opened a 1-length lead after the first quarter.

“The ground is really soft right now. He’s a fast horse so I wasn’t worried,” Ortiz said. “He’s fast out of the gate. He’s a speed horse, so I let him do his thing. He broke good and was on the lead and after that I just let him relax and be him. When I asked, he responded really well.”

Dirty and Jose Ortiz engaged the favorite around the turn and were still at the leader’s flank at the eighth pole. At that point, World Of Trouble kicked clear and put away any doubts he’d be caught.
