The Grade 1 Alabama Stakes – America’s oldest stakes race for 3-year-old fillies with a star-studded history – delivers an extremely deep and talented field for the 136th renewal today at Saratoga Race Course.

Each of the nine fillies in the field are stakes winners and it’s a unique mélange of contenders that will test the 10-furlong trip on the main track – from a multiple Grade 1 winner on the turf trying the dirt for the first time to a Canadian classic winner returning to the dirt after winning back-to-back starts on synthetic, from a pair of shippers from Southern California to the winners of just about every important 3-year-old filly race in the U.S. not named Abel Tasman.

Abel Tasman is about the only thing missing from the Alabama, whose list of recent winners includes Songbird, Royal Delta, Blind Luck, Silverbulletday, Heavenly Prize and Sky Beauty to go with legends Go For Wand, Shuvee, Gamely, Busanda, Top Flight, Beldame and the first winner Woodbine in 1872.

Considering the race brought together so many top contenders – and truth told it didn’t seem fair to profile one over the other – our staff caught up with the connections of each of the nine to see what they thought of the race.
