Jockey Frankie Pennington was the most popular man at Saratoga Race Course after he rode Always Sunshine to victory in the $100,000 Tale Of The Cat Stakes. As the rider and his mount posed in the winners’ circle, cheers rang out from the crowd and fans waved their racing programs in the air in celebration of Pennington’s first local win.

 “Frankie! Big win, brother.”

“Yeah Frankie! Alright Frankie!”

“Way to go Frank!”

The shouts continued as Pennington hopped off and weighed in. After a brief stop for an interview with the press, Pennington set off for the jockeys’ room. As he weaved his way through the masses, fans gushed over his win as if he were a hometown star, not a Parx regular here for one mount.

“The best ever in Philly!”

“Welcome to ’Toga, baby,” one fan yelled as he embraced the rider.

“I knew you were going to win it all day,” another said as he flaunted a winning ticket.

“Can I have your goggles?”

“Can I get a picture? That was money!”

The experience of winning a stakes at Saratoga and the ensuing jamboree – dozens of selfies taken, autographs signed and congratulations accepted – moved Pennington.

“This is great. It’s a great feeling, great experience. It’s unbelievable,” he said. “To come up to Saratoga, which is the biggest track out there and to win, first win here in a stake, is really nice, it’s a really great feeling.”
