A new venue did little to deter horsemen from around the world from entering horses for 2017 Breeders’ Cup World Championships as 187 horses were pre-entered for next weekend’s 13 Grade 1 stakes at Del Mar.
The number of pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup is an increase of two from a year ago and the group includes nine defending or former winners – Arrogate, Highland Reel, Drefong, Oscar Performance, Lady Eli, Champagne Room, Queen’s Trust, Finest City and Mongolian Saturday.
Arrogate, the winner of last year’s $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, is one of 14 entered for the 2017 renewal of the weekend’s signature event. He’ll vie for favoritism in the 1 1/4-mile Classic with multiple Grade 1 winner Gun Runner and stablemates Collected and West Coast.
The Classic is the last of the 13 Breeders’ Cup races and will be broadcast live on NBC during a one-hour broadcast from 8-9 p.m. ET. Post time for the Classic is 8:35 p.m. ET. All of the Breeders’ Cup races will be shown on the NBC Sports Network on cable Friday (5-8 p.m. ET) and Saturday (1:30-8 p.m. ET). The races will also be broadcast on the radio through the Horse Racing Radio Network from 5-8 p.m. Friday and 3-9 p.m. Saturday.
Final entries for the 13 Breeders’ Cup races are due Monday and post positions will be determined that day. A maximum of 14 starters are allowed in 12 of the 13 races, the lone exception the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which is limited to 12 starters.
