Authentic, connections top Eclipse Award finalists

- -

Authentic and his Breeders’ Cup Classic- and Kentucky Derby-winning owner, breeder, trainer and jockey were named finalists for Eclipse Award honors Saturday by the National Turf Writers And Broadcasters, National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Daily Racing Form.

Authentic earned finalist consideration for Horse of the Year and in the 3-year-old male category and he figures to be a heavy favorite for both. The other Horse of the Year finalists are Improbable, a finalist in the older dirt male division; and Monomoy Girl, a finalist in the older dirt female division.

The partnership of Spendthrift Farm LLC, MyRaceHorse Stable, Madaket Stables LLC and Starlight Racing, which campaigned Authentic, are finalists for outstanding owner along with Godolphin and Seth Klarman’s Klaravich Stable. Authentic’s other human connections that are finalists are Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds (breeder), Bob Baffert (trainer) and John Velazquez (jockey).

Baffert is a four-time Eclipse Award winner, the most recent title in 2015 when he trained Triple Crown winner American Pharoah; and Velazquez won back-to-back Eclipse Awards in 2004 and 2005.

The Eclipse Awards are determined by a vote of the NTWAB, NTRA and Daily Racing Form. Of the 249 eligible voters, 238 took part in the voting. Finalists are determined in each category by voters’ top three selections, using a 10-5-1 point system. The Eclipse Award winners are determined solely by first-place votes.

The winners in the 17 equine and human categories will be announced during a virtual ceremony of the 50th Eclipse Awards, presented by Spendthrift Farm, on TVG and other outlets at 8 p.m. ET Thursday, Jan. 28.
