American Pharoah 1-5 on early line for Travers

- -

Triple Crown American Pharoah drew post-position No. 2 in the field of 10 entered Tuesday night for Saturday’s 146th running of the $1.6 million Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.

American Pharoah was pegged as the heavy 1-5 favorite in the 1 1/4-mile test that will be his second race since sweeping the Triple Crown this spring. The Pioneerof The Nile colt won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational earlier this month at Monmouth Park for his seventh win in as many starts this year. Regular rider Victor Espinoza will be in from Southern California to ride American Pharoah for trainer Bob Baffert, who won the 2001 Travers with Point Given.

Frosted, second to American Pharoah in the Belmont Stakes and winner of the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, is the 6-1 second choice from post No. 6. Texas Red, winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and the Jim Dandy at this year’s Saratoga meet, is the 8-1 third choice.

The other seven entrants are double-digit odds against American Pharoah, who will try to join Whirlaway as Triple Crown winners who also won the Travers.
